Thank you for your interest in our Honors Program. Due to budgetary constraints we have temporarily suspended the program. Please check back on the status of the program sometime after January 2012.
The Office of the Attorney General is the largest law firm
in the State of Maryland, with varied, complex legal
work and a distinguished
history of successful advocacy. Our 430 attorneys act as legal
advisors and litigators for the agencies, boards, commissions,
officials, and institutions of Maryland State Government. Our
work ranges from advising the Maryland Legislature on
the constitutionality
of proposed legislation to representing State agencies and officials
in State and federal courts including the Maryland Court of Appeals
(Maryland’s highest court), the United States Court of
Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the United States Supreme
Court. From
protecting the Chesapeake Bay against polluters to keeping Maryland
families safe from violence and unscrupulous business practices,
our office is committed to serving the citizens of Maryland.
In 2008, the Attorney General instituted an Honors Program
for young lawyers who are interested in public service
in Maryland
and the
cutting-edge work that state Attorneys General are doing today.
As a general rule, the Maryland Attorney General’s Office
hires experienced attorneys who have practiced law for at least
five years.
The Honors Program offers younger lawyers an opportunity to begin
their legal careers in our office, in positions of substantial
responsibility.
Qualifications
The Attorney General’s Honors Program is open
to candidates who are no more than two years out of law school
or one year out of a judicial clerkship. We annually hire one
or two individuals with exceptional academic and personal
accomplishments and writing skills. Honors Program lawyers fill
two-year positions, after which they are eligible to apply for
permanent positions
within the Office. Those applicants who are not already members
of the Maryland
Bar should plan on taking the Maryland Bar Exam if
selected for the program.
