The Office of the Attorney General is the largest law firm in the
State of Maryland, with varied, complex legal work and a distinguished
history of successful advocacy. Our attorneys act as legal advisors
and litigators for the agencies, boards, commissions, officials,
and institutions of Maryland State Government. Our work ranges
from advising the Maryland Legislature on the constitutionality
of proposed legislation to representing State agencies and officials
in State and federal courts including the Maryland Court of Appeals
(Maryland’s highest court), the United States Court of Appeals
for the Fourth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. From
protecting the Chesapeake Bay against polluters to keeping Maryland
families safe from violence and unscrupulous business practices,
our office is committed to serving the citizens of Maryland.
The Attorney General has developed an Associate Program for recent
law school graduates and young lawyers who are interested in public
service in Maryland. This Program may be of particular interest
to recent law school graduates who wish to experience state government
intensively, for up to a year on a volunteer basis, without a longer-term
commitment. The Associate Program offers recent graduates and young
lawyers an opportunity to begin their careers by volunteering in
our office, learning about state government and the work of the
Office of the Attorney General. Participants in the Associate Program
are unpaid.
Qualifications
The Attorney General’s Associate Program is open to candidates
who are no more than two years out of law school, including, but
not limited to those whose start date for other employment has
been delayed. Applicants should have strong research and writing

hours per week, for a period of not less than ten months. Applicants
who are unable to commit to the ten-month time period will be considered

both the Attorney General Associate and Law Clerk Programs serve
as unpaid volunteers, but are not prohibited from receiving stipends
from third parties such as law firms.
