AG Gansler & Local Lawyers Sort and Pack Food to Kick Off
25th Annual Lawyers' Campaign Against Hunger
Legal community assists the Maryland Food Bank feed those in need
Baltimore, MD ( Oct. 18, 2012) - Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler worked alongside local lawyers and other volunteers Wednesday evening to officially kick off the 25th Annual Lawyers' Campaign Against Hunger. Serving as the campaign's Honorary Chair, Attorney General Gansler sorted and packed food at the Maryland Food Bank's distribution center in Halethorpe. The packages will be delivered to some of the 600 soup kitchens, pantries, shelters and other community organizations served by the Maryland Food Bank.
"I am honored to once again be part of this effort," said Attorney General Gansler. "While the economy continues to improve, there is still an enormous need to provide basic nutrition to families and individuals throughout Maryland."
Executive Committee Chair Michele Bresnick Walsh, a Member of Gordon Feinblatt, LLC, added, "The Executive Committee has been hard at work preparing the campaign for today's 25th Anniversary kick-off. We are proud to announce that we have raised $172,000 towards our goal of $330,000 from sponsorship level gifts, as well as other donations. We now encourage all of Maryland's legal community, as a profession, to join together in the fight against hunger by making individual and professional donations to surpass our goal, in this very special silver anniversary year."
Information about the many ways to help fight hunger in Maryland - for lawyers and non-lawyers alike - can be found at www.lawyersagainsthunger.org.
Since its inception 25 years ago, the Lawyers' Campaign Against Hunger has collected $3.18 million to fight hunger in Maryland. "This campaign helped the Maryland Food Bank distribute 26.1 million pounds of food to families in need last year," says Maryland Food Bank President & CEO Deborah Flateman. "Unfortunately, more than 740,000 Marylanders still don't know where their next meal is coming from. We're hopeful that with support from Attorney General Gansler, dedicated committee members and the law community, the 25th Anniversary Lawyers' Campaign Against Hunger will surpass fundraising records and help us reach many more children and families in need."
In 2011, the Lawyers' Campaign Against Hunger raised $307,000, helping the Maryland Food Bank and Capital Area Food Bank stock the shelves at more than 800 soup kitchens, pantries, shelters and other community organizations that serve families and individuals in need across the state.
The Maryland Food Bank's mission is to lead the movement and nurture the belief that together we can improve the lives of all Marylanders by ending hunger. The Maryland Food Bank has facilities in Baltimore County, Washington County and Wicomico County, and services all counties in the state except Prince George's and Montgomery, which are serviced by the Capital Area Food Bank. Both food banks are beneficiaries of the Lawyers' Campaign Against Hunger.
