Attorney General Gansler Honored for Fighting Identity Theft at C3 Conference
C3: Cyberethics, Cybersafety and Cybersecurity Conference
BALTIMORE,
MD ( Oct. 7, 2011) - Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler received the LifeLock Ultimate Award at the 10th Annual C3 Conference held at the University of Maryland, College Park this week. The award underscores the specific commitment of both the C3 Conference and the Office of Attorney General -- protecting Marylanders from identity theft and the financial damage it generates.
“Identity theft can occur while you're at the store or restaurant, from your computer or even from the papers you throw into your garbage can,” said Attorney General Gansler. “While we will continue to protect Marylanders from identity theft when that information is outside your control, everyone can avert the risk by taking a few simple precautions. I accept this award on behalf of the many hardworking attorneys and investigators in my office and the dedicated law enforcement officers throughout Maryland.”
In July, Attorney General Gansler concluded an investigation into LimeWire, the producer of peer-to-peer file sharing software programs. The settlement ensured that LimeWire, or any future company associated with its principals, would provide sufficient notice to its customers of the risks and threats to personal information posed by the use of file-sharing software and services.
The two-day C3 Conference is hosted by Educational Technology Policy, Research and Outreach and the CyberWatch Center. The conference's core mission is, “to inform the educational community about the ethical, legal, safety and security implications of technology use and illustrate how educators and parents can apply these concepts to their own setting. Tutorial sessions include practical applications that can be immediately applied to your home or classroom setting.”
