State Employee Convicted of Felony Theft

BALTIMORE, MD ( April 12, 2011) - Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler today announced the guilty plea of Charrise Marie James, 39, former division manager at the Division of Research Services at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, Department of Psychiatry.  James admitted to stealing $83,739.58 from Division over a 33-month period, ending in October 2009.  The theft scheme started soon after the defendant's management position was expanded to make her the custodian of the working funds.  The theft was discovered during a risk audit of the Psychiatry Department by the University Systems' Office of Internal Audits.

                Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Marcus Z. Shar ordered $83,739.58 in restitution, probation before judgment, and 500 hours of community service.
