Office of Attorney General Reaches Settlement with Former Dean of the University of Maryland School of Law

BALTIMORE, MD ( Dec. 22, 2010) - Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler today announced a settlement with Karen Rothenberg, former dean of the University of Maryland School of Law.  The settlement resolves issues raised in a February audit of the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) by the Maryland Department of Legislative Services regarding Rothenberg's compensation.  Rothenberg has agreed to return funds she accepted based on the approval of former UMB President David Ramsay.  The State determined that Ramsay did not have the authority to approve the payments.  Rothenberg will return $311,398, which represents the payments identified in the audit, less some taxes already paid on the funds.

“In reaching this agreement, we took into account Professor Rothenberg's service to the School of Law and that there were good-faith misunderstandings relating to matters of compensation that resulted in these payments being made and accepted,” said Attorney General Gansler.

“I am pleased that agreement has been reached and that there has been resolution of the issues raised in the audit,” said William E. (Brit) Kirwan, Chancellor of the University System of Maryland.   “The University System of Maryland and UMB are looking forward to the return of Professor Karen Rothenberg to the University of Maryland School of Law's full-time faculty.  She was an extremely effective dean during her tenure, leading the School of Law to a significant rise in national rankings and to new fundraising heights. Her well-respected expertise will continue to benefit both students and colleagues as she resumes full-time faculty responsibilities in January.”
