Bowie Man Convicted of Insurance Fraud

BALTIMORE, MD ( July 17, 2009) - Attorney General Douglas F. Gansler announced today that Melvin L. Grant, 55, of Bowie was sentenced today on a single count of insurance fraud. Prince George’s County Circuit Court Judge Larnzell Martin, Jr. sentenced Grant to 8 years, all suspended, five years supervised probation and ordered Grant to pay $51,976 in restitution to The Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company.

In September 2007, Grant submitted false documents to an insurer indicating that he was deceased. He then obtained the proceeds of his life insurance policies without the knowledge of his wife, daughter and son who were the named beneficiaries.

The conviction follows a joint investigation by the Insurance Fraud Division of the Maryland Insurance Administration and the Office of the Attorney General.
