Bowie Man Convicted of
Insurance Fraud
BALTIMORE,
MD ( July 17, 2009) - Attorney General Douglas F.
Gansler announced today that Melvin L. Grant, 55, of Bowie
was sentenced today on a single count of insurance fraud. Prince
George’s County Circuit Court Judge Larnzell Martin,
Jr. sentenced Grant to 8 years, all suspended, five years supervised
probation and ordered Grant to pay $51,976 in restitution to
The Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company.
In September 2007, Grant submitted false documents to an insurer
indicating that he was deceased. He then obtained the proceeds
of his life insurance policies without the knowledge of his wife,
daughter and son who were the named beneficiaries.
The conviction follows a joint investigation by the Insurance
Fraud Division of the Maryland Insurance Administration and the
Office of the Attorney General.
