The
Office of Attorney General’s Response to
the Decision in Stop Slots MD v. State Board of Elections
BALTIMORE, MD (September 10, 2008)- In response to the Order and
Opinion issued this evening by the judges in Anne Arundel County
Circuit Court, Austin Schlick, Chief of Civil Litigation, states
the following:
“The Anne Arundel
County Circuit Court confirmed what we've been stating all along,
that the General Assembly properly put
the slots issue before the voters. This is the second time the
courts have rejected attempts to keep slots off the November ballot
and we hope the issue has finally been put to rest.
The Court indicated
one word should be inserted into the ballot language. There is
no single correct way to condense a proposed
constitutional amendment into a ballot question. Like the Secretary
of State's proposed language, the Court's language is a reasonable
approach. The State Board of Elections can now move forward to
certify the November ballot question.”
