CURRAN
HONORED WITH “LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT” AWARD
FROM MARYLAND CONSUMER RIGHTS COALITION
Tonight Maryland
Attorney General J. Joseph Curran, Jr., who has been nationally
recognized for his leadership in consumer protection
and advocacy, will be presented with a “Lifetime Achievement
Award” from the Maryland Consumer Rights Coalition, Inc.
Protecting Marylanders from unfair and deceptive business practices
has been one of Mr. Curran’s top priorities during his administration.
According to
Mark H. Steinbach, President of the Coalition, “Joe
Curran has been the kind of Attorney General that makes advocates
in other states jealous. He has been a rock-solid lawyer for the
citizens of Maryland, setting high standards for protecting consumers,
the elderly and infirm, those too often unable to protect themselves.”
Throughout his twenty years as Attorney General for Maryland,
Mr. Curran has crusaded on behalf of all consumers; under his
direction more than $100 million has been recovered for Marylanders.
Curran’s Consumer Protection Division receives approximately
15,000 complaints a year from consumers looking for help, and
more than 60% of those who file complaints get relief.
The Consumer
Protection Division protects Marylanders from unfair or deceptive
business practices in their dealings with stores,
telemarketers, car dealers and repair facilities, new home developers—and
all other businesses that sell or rent consumer goods, realty,
credit or services. The Consumer Protection Division provides mediation
services to consumers to help resolve complaints against businesses
and health insurance carriers. The Division can also provide information
regarding the complaint history of a business or individual, whether
a health club is registered with the state as required by law,
and provide numerous publications that help consumers make the
best decisions in the marketplace.
“Joe Curran keenly appreciates that those who do not have
the money often lack the means to protect their interests. He truly
has been an attorney general for all the citizens of Maryland,” Steinbach
said.
