BALTIMORE COUNTY CAREGIVER CHARGED WITH NEGLECT
OF A VULNERABLE ADULT
Maryland Attorney General J. Joseph Curran Jr. announces that
former caregiver, Nancy Dewitt has been charged in connection with
an incident that occurred in Baltimore County on May 30, 2006.
It is alleged that Dewitt failed to provide necessary assistance
and resources for the developmentally disabled woman who was in
her care.
Dewitt, 49, of the 1300 block of Highland Drive in Baltimore,
was charged by criminal information in the Circuit Court for Baltimore
County with one count of neglect of a vulnerable adult. Intentional
abuse or neglect of a vulnerable adult is a misdemeanor punishable
by a maximum of five years in prison and a fine of $5,000. A criminal
information is an accusation, and all persons are presumed innocent
unless proven guilty.
This case is
being prosecuted by the Attorney General’s
Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, which has authority to prosecute abuse
or neglect of vulnerable persons in facilities that receive Medicaid
funds.
Trial is scheduled for September 12, 2006.
