FORMER STATE EMPLOYEE CHARGED WITH THEFT

Maryland Attorney General J. Joseph Curran, Jr. announced today that a Criminal Information has been filed against Joseph A. Shryock, of Tanglewood Rd., Catonsville, in the Circuit Court for Baltimore County.

The Criminal Information charges Mr. Shryock, 47, with one count of felony theft in connection with his former employment with the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. It is alleged that between April 2003 and August 2003, Mr. Shryock received $2,900 of stolen property, by obtaining various bathroom fixtures, the cost of which was improperly passed through to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

A criminal information is merely an accusation of wrongdoing, and every individual is presumed innocent until the charges are proven by the State. The case was referred by the UMBC Police Department, and investigated by the Maryland State Police and the University System of Maryland Internal Audit Office. It will be prosecuted by the Office of the Attorney General, Criminal Investigations Division.
