VOTERS AGAIN REMINDED HOW TO OBTAIN ABSENTEE BALLOTS

Attorney General J. Joseph Curran, Jr., today was joined by State Elections Board officials in again reminding registered Maryland voters of the proper procedure for obtaining an absentee ballot for the November 5 election. State Board of Elections regulations require that an official State or federal application for absentee ballot or an informal written request be submitted. Election boards cannot process a preprinted form that was widely distributed by the Republican Party. If a voter submitted the Republican form, it will be necessary to resubmit an official form or an informal written request.

Any registered Maryland voter wishing to send an informal written request must include the voter’s name, residence address, date of birth, the address to which the ballot should be mailed, the reason for absentee voting, and the voter’s signature. The completed official application form or informal written request must be received at the voter’s local election board by Tuesday, October 29. If it is delivered by mail or in person, it must arrive by 4:30 p.m.; if it is faxed, it must arrive before midnight. Following the deadline, an absentee ballot may be obtained only in person at the local election board office by the voter or the voter’s duly designated agent, using a special late absentee ballot application.

Attorney General Curran urges Maryland voters to contact their local election boards or the State Board of Elections (phone, 410-269-2840, 800-222-8683; fax, 410-974-2019; MD Relay Service, 800-735-2258) to obtain the correct official State form. The form can also be downloaded from the State Board’s website, www.elections.state.md.us.
