NEW Health Coverage Options for January 1st - MHIP BRIDGE PROGRAM

If you attempted to enroll in health coverage through Maryland Health Connection with a January 1, 2014 effective date, but were unable because you experienced technical challenges, you may now enroll in the Maryland Health Insurance Plan (MHIP) with coverage retroactive to January 1. There are significant pros and cons to choosing this option. Please speak with a trusted advisor before making any health insurance decision.

Important Information

  • Applications must be submitted by February 15, 2014 for a January 1, 2014 effective date.
  • Individuals eligible for health insurance through Medicaid, Medicare or an employer-sponsored plan are not eligible for the MHIP Bridge Program.

Enrollment Dates are as follows:

Date Application Received Effective Date of Coverage Options
Jan. 1 - Feb. 15, 2014 January 1, 2014 or February 1, 2014
Feb. 16 - March 15, 2014 February 1, 2014 or March 1, 2014
Mar. 16 - March 31, 2014 March 1, 2014

These plans will end March 31, 2014, unless that date is extended by the MHIP Board of Directors. This is meant to be a temporary plan - the goal is to get consumers enrolled in a Qualified Health Plan as soon as possible.

Note: If you previously registered through the retroactive private insurance claim line -- 1-800-396-1961 -- prior to 5:00pm EST, Tuesday, January 21, 2014, you do not need to contact MHIP.

If you need in-person assistance, contact the authorized Connector Entity in your neighborhood.
